Phishing

Got a suspicious email or text, or think your account was hacked

Most break-ins start with a message that looks real. The most important rule: don't click links in unexpected messages.

  1. Signs of a scam: time pressure ("your account will be blocked today"), a request for card details or a password, an odd link, or a message from the post office, your bank or a payment app that you didn't expect.
  2. Check the full sender address and the link without clicking it. An address like israelpost-delivery.top is not the post office.
  3. Want to check? Go to the site or app yourself, not through the link in the message.
  4. If you already typed a password: change it right away, from another device if possible, and on every site where you used the same password.
  5. Turn on two-step verification: in Google, at myaccount.google.com → Security → 2-Step Verification.
  6. In Google, check Security → Your devices and sign out any device you don't recognize.
Important: If you gave card or bank details, call your card company or bank right away and ask them to block the card. No bank or serious company will ask for your password or verification code by message or phone.

Quick questions

I clicked a link but didn't type anything. Is that dangerous?

Usually just clicking isn't enough to break in. Close the page, don't download any file, and run a virus scan to be safe.

How do I make a good password?

A short sentence that's easy for you to remember, with a few words and a number, and a different password for every important site. A password manager helps remember them all.
