No sound on your computer: a quick 5-step check

Most of the time the sound is just going to the wrong place, or it's muted.

No time for this? I'll fix it remotely, from ₪99

  1. Make sure sound isn't muted and volume isn't at zero, both on the computer and in the app itself (YouTube, Zoom).
  2. Click the speaker icon on the taskbar and check where sound is going. Sometimes it's sent to Bluetooth headphones or a monitor.
  3. Unplug and reconnect headphones or speakers. For Bluetooth, remove the pairing and pair again.
  4. Run the troubleshooter: right-click the speaker icon → Troubleshoot sound problems.
  5. Restart the computer. If it started after an update, check for a newer sound driver.
MacOn a Mac: System Settings → Sound → Output, and check that the right device is selected and volume isn't at zero.
Important: If the speaker is connected and detected but you hear only hiss or beeping, it may be a hardware fault in the speaker or the jack.

Quick questions

Why is there no sound in just one app?

Each app has its own volume, and sometimes it's muted or sending sound to another device. Check the app's own settings and the computer's volume mixer.

My Bluetooth headphones are connected but silent. Why?

Sometimes the computer keeps sending sound to the speakers. Pick the headphones as the output device from the speaker icon on the taskbar.
